It’s late May 2007 and I’m standing on stage at the London Palladium collecting an award for Casualty, dressed in a Betty Jackson dress and worrying if I look fat or whether I have enough lipstick on. Seven days later I am in the slums of Kampala, Uganda, sitting in what can only be described as a concrete cube the size of my bathroom. The six children, gathered around me, know it only as ‘home’. Cockroaches scale the walls and there is a torrential rainstorm outside which is bringing filthy water, along with the sewage from the roads, into the hut.
